Week 31: 26th July – 1st August 1965

Monday 26th July 1965
Doubtful start to wash day but with the help of Mary’s line I was able to dry it all by lunch time. Took the children for a very long walk across the Heath – about 2 hours! Cyril got the miseries again tonight – I wish he had never started that bricklaying.

Tuesday 27th July 1965
Another day without rain!! We all had a quick trip to Esher this morning. Tim has watched cricket and racing all afternoon. I took the children on the Heath again.

Wednesday 28th July 1965
Didn’t venture far today – only to the village. Very cloudy weather and I’m feeling very tired!

Thursday 29th July 1965
Philip woke us up in the small hours – coughing.
A quick trip to Esher this morning to the bank – am solvent again now. A very busy day – washing, ironing, defrosting fridge and cooking.

Friday 30th July 1965
Tim leaves.
Tim left at 9:05 – have since heard he arrived home 12:30! We’ve put the rooms back to normal. Have been over to L.A. (London Airport – Heathrow) this evening and confirmed Tim’s seat on the plane next Sunday. Have been wrestling with my accounts since our return.

Saturday 31st July 1965
Summer today – it’s warm and sunny we’ve had a shopping morning – first one like this for some time. We’ve been to Leatherhead and then to Claygate to buy me some house shoes (HOUSE SHOES?) Bought Philip some lace-ups in a sale at Leatherhead. Cyril working on the wall this afternoon. It’s nearing completion now T.G.

Man at work! Still!

Man at work! Still!

Sunday 1st August 1965
A warm, sunny day – just like summer! We took our tea out on Ranmore Common – Mary and Leonard followed us there later and we all played cricket and had fun – got home about 7:30. Tim rang later – Joan had been trying to get us during the afternoon. Leonard brought in loads of transparencies to show us after the children were in bed – so we had another late night!!

Week 30: 19th – 25th July 1965

Monday 19th July 1965
Nice day for the washing – it was all dried, ironed and put away before tea. Tim went out this afternoon on the Heath – and met us at the school to the children’s delight – lift home!

Tuesday 20th July 1965
Very heavy rainstorms this afternoon and some thunder. Tim and I went into Cobham this morning for new shuttlecocks and a quick trip to Esher this afternoon.
Young Wives tonight – last meeting.

Wednesday 21st July 1965
Very stormy again – much too wet for me to mow the lawn. I doubt if Cyril will be able to do any bricklaying tonight. Have only been as far as the village.
Letter from Mur.

Thursday 22nd July 1965
Philip had us up most of the night last night – he had a high temperature so I kept him in bed today.
Weather much improved. Tim has been able to lie out a bit in the sun. Cyril on the wall again this evening.
Rainfall at Cobham 1½″ in 24 hours.

Friday 23rd July 1965
School Term ends 3pm
Another very stormy day – Tim and I had half an hour in Leatherhead after lunch, but it didn’t give me enough time to do much of the weekend shopping.
Joan rang – they are enjoying their holiday.

Saturday 24th July 1965
Don’t know why but I’ve been feeling very tired all morning. Cyril went to Leatherhead – did the rest of the shopping and had a fault in the car put right. Since then he has been working on the wall. I’ve only been as far as Wilson’s this afternoon.

Sunday 25th July 1965
We’ve had a ride out today to Box Hill and Epsom Downs. Leonard came to lunch and we had a hilarious hour! He provided the wine – and liqueur. Didn’t get up from table until 2:30pm.

Week 29 : 12th – 18th July 1965

Monday 12th July 1965
Poured all day – reckon it did all night too by the amount of water lying around. Letter from Joan confirming Tim’s visit on Friday.

Tuesday 13th July 1965
Prizegiving 2:30pm
Managed to dry and iron the wash today – before going to Prizegiving. We didn’t win any prizes. I had a shampoo (at home – do it yourself) this morning – dressed myself up for Prizegiving!

Wednesday 14th July 1965
Cyril to Cardiff
To Town today (Any references to ‘Town’ meant London. And from Surrey, you travel ‘up’ to Town!)
I’ve had a very ‘spendy’ day – walked the length of Oxford Street and bought a very extravagant coat in the sales – also some underwear and several odds and ends. Went up with Mary and bumped into her on and off in Oxford Street. We had a snack lunch together before I came back in time to walk home with Phyl and the children. Very tired – but I’ve washed and polished the car this evening.

Thursday 15th July 1965
Did some washing today and had a general tidy up. Watched Gill’s last dancing lesson – I wish I had insisted she keep it up – even though she is hopeless! Baked – and mowed lawn this evening.

Friday 16th July 1965
Tim coming.
Did the weekend shopping this morning – and cleaned up the house after lunch. Poor Philip cried all the way home from school as he felt ill – went straight to bed – feverish. Tim arrived, tired but quite well and laden with food etc. at quarter to six.
Cyril working on the wall!

Saturday 17th July 1965
A lazy sort of day for all of us, except poor Cyril who is almost breaking his back working on the wall. Tim is quite well – the children and I went up to the village with him this morning in the old crock! I think we are going next door to play Canasta tonight.

Sunday 18th July 1965
We’ve had a nice day – Cyril hasn’t done any building – we’ve played lots of badminton. After lunch we went to London Airport to book Tim’s seat to Sweden. Cyril let him use our Anglia to take Diana out during the evening.
Joan rang – and Doris.

Week 28 : 5th – 11th July 1965

Monday 5th July 1965
Day off from school. Gillian out with Nicky. Busy day with washing, cooking, lawn mowing and ironing. Phil very tired and irritable. It’s a good thing Gillian was out all afternoon or there would have been some fights! Have written to Mur and Maggie.

Tuesday 6th July 1965
Young Wives
Not a very interesting Y.W. All chat about helping Basutoland – but what can a dozen wives of Oxshott do to save a starving country?
Cyril very busy cementing until after nine o’clock.

Wednesday 7th July 1965
Cyril at Cardiff
School Sports
I fear we haven’t any budding athletes in the family – Both Gill and Phil brought up the rear in their races! The sun shone all afternoon and I think I got a trifle sunburnt!!
Washed the car tonight and it poured afterwards.

Thursday 8th July 1965
I’ve had a very nice morning mooching around Bentalls’ sale. Fitted on several coats but didn’t find one I liked. Only bought a few odds and ends. Got home at 2pm – Gillian went dancing – Phil and I had a cuppa with Rosaleen – we all got home about 5:15 and Cyril was waiting for us!

Friday 9th July 1965
Did all the shopping in Leatherhead this morning so that Cyril can have a full day on the wall tomorrow! I was very tired at lunchtime – washing as soon as I got back from Leatherhead and mowed the lawn. Bought a badminton set! Leonard home from Norway and they all came in this evening. Hence late getting to bed. Gill and Phil both VERY sick in the night so we had a very bad night!!

Cyril really could turn his hand to anything! Just over his right shoulder you can see young Julian watching from his pram!

Man at work! Just over Cyril’s right shoulder you can see young Julian watching from his pram!

Saturday 10th July 1965
Both better this morning though Phil looking washed out. Gill has gone to Debbie’s party. Cyril is on the third layer of bricks. I had to do some washing this morning – sheets and so on.
Canasta party tonight – chicken and wine ‘do’.

Sunday 11th July 1965
We didn’t wake up until 8:50am!
Philip can’t be feeling quite fit yet as he didn’t want to come to the village cricket match with Gill and I. Cyril has been working on the wall all day and is four bricks high now. Raining on and off most of the day.
