Week 44 : 25th – 31st October 1965

Monday 25th October 1965
Busy morning at the office with the boss being back in the chair. I even had to bring some home with me!! Finished the ironing before tea so was able to do my work before Keep Fit.

Tuesday 26th October 1965
Have had a headache most of today – must be all the bookwork I’m having to cope with. Took Julian up to the village and to meet the children from school. Don’t feel much like Young Wives tonight.

Wednesday 27th October 1965
Gillian’s enrolment day.
My longest ever morning at work – was there until 1:30, writing out cheques. Glad it wasn’t my own money going out! Gillian’s enrolment went off very well and she is so pleased with herself now!

Thursday 28th October 1965
Phil to Caroline O’s party
Nasty wet morning. Children walked to school without any fuss – Phil was very keen on the party after school – it’s to be a big one from all accounts. I’m looking forward to my pay day tomorrow! Cyril home about 5:40 with a heavy cold.

Friday 29th October 1965
School closes for Half Term
Rotten day today – couldn’t get away from the office till 12 and I wanted to catch 11am bus. However, I went on the 12 and met Cyril. We had our lunch out and did some shopping. After school I took the children to Claygate and bought Gill’s shoes.
I was ‘taken’ this evening and have been very sick all night.

Saturday 30th October 1965
Ugh – I feel horrible! Terrible night – sick and diarrhoea and nearly passing out. Poor Cyril – rough for him too! Have spent most of today in bed – up this evening doing my books etc. etc. Children have been very good – helping and ‘lending a hand’!!!

Sunday 31st October 1965
On my feet today! – and between us we did the washing about lunchtime. Gillian took it into her head to make a ‘guy’. I had to sew its head and legs on this afternoon.

On the front doorstep making a mess!

Week 43 : 18th – 24th October 1965

Monday 18th October 1965
Mr Lobell and John D. to lunch.
I left the office at 10:30 – lunch was all ready when the men came home. We had a very enjoyable time as usual. I went to Penny Nairne’s this afternoon – bought a lovely pink nylon dress for Gill for 20/- (£1) and an underslip for 10/- (50p).
Keep Fit.

Tuesday 19th October 1965
Guides and Brownies Coffee Morning.
The wedding pictures arrived from Mick this morning. Very nice too – and I now owe them a £1! Quite enjoyed the Coffee Morning. Ellen C gave me a lift down and I was home before twelve. Had a clean up this afternoon.

Wednesday 20th October 1965
Was home before 11:30 – after doing my shopping in the village. The Findlays gave me a lift home. Have made Gill’s marble birthday cake this afternoon. She has been to Brownies and is being enrolled next week.

Thursday 21st October 1965
Went on the 11:00am bus to Esher and was able to buy bits and pieces for Gill’s party and some of the weekend shopping. Rang Cyril and he picked me up – we also nipped into Claygate and bought Cyril some slippers. Ivy came in for a cuppa.

Friday 22nd October 1965
Gillian – eight
Gillian loved the dress I bought for her birthday.
Not much for me at work today so I went on into Leatherhead and did most of the weekend shopping – actually I think I’ve about finished it. Was home about twenty past twelve. Have had a busy evening preparing for tomorrow. Gillian has had an exciting eighth birthday.

Saturday 23rd October 1965
Gillian’s party.
Coo – what a day.  And what a din ten or eleven girls can kick up in the party mood!! We had a trip to Esher this morning and chose the dining room wallpaper.
Party seemed to be a great success! We were worn out but managed to pull ourselves together enough to play Canasta with Mary and Leonard.
Extra hour’s sleep tonight as the clocks go back.

Sunday 24th October 1965
Clocks go back.
It’s been a nice long morning and we’ve done lots of jobs! I’ve done some washing and ironing. Rang Joan to see if Pa had recovered from his cold. Had a word with him – he sounded very thick.

Week 42 : 11th – 17th October 1965

Monday 11th October 1965
Keep Fit
Had so much work at the office today that I came home making my mind up to give it up on Mr Murray’s return!
Went to Keep Fit feeling as though I needed it!

Tuesday 12th October 1965
Young Wives
Much better day at the office – so am reconsidering yesterday’s decision!! Had a good cookery evening at Y.W. – after a session here this afternoon with the children making biscuits!!

Wednesday 13th October 1965
Nice day – another busy one at the office and I don’t know when we shall get straight – or at least when I will get straight.
Gill to Brownies.

Thursday 14th October 1965
Harvest Festival at School
Office work easing up a bit now that I’m managing to get down my pile. I seem to be paying out all the firm’s money! Not a lot to do at home – have cleaned the brass this week! Big deal!!

Friday 15th October 1965
Went to Esher on the 12:05 bus – Cyril picked me up for the homeward trip. Took Julian up to the village with me this afternoon to buy the veg etc. and to meet the children. No baking tonight, thank goodness.

Saturday 16th October 1965
To Molly and Ted
Very nice day and we had a pretty good trip to Watford – but got lost during the last little bit of the trip!! Enjoyed ourselves very much – children were quite good. We left soon after seven and arrived home at 8:30pm. Phil was a bit upset as he left his new car behind. We had shopped at Surbiton en route, for Gill’s satchel (birthday) and Phil bought a car with his left-over birthday money.

Sunday 17th October 1965
We weren’t going to do much today, but Cyril has worked hard clearing out the porch and painting. I’ve done some washing and ironing and prepared part of tomorrow’s lunch. Had a terrible back ache all day.

Week 41 : 4th – 10th October 1965

Monday 4th October 1965
Julian’s 1st birthday.
Cyril to Leeds.
Went to work this morning – have been suffering from mental fatigue ever since!! To Penny Nairne’s ’boutique’ this afternoon and I hope to go to Keep Fit this evening – that’s if Phyl can sit in. Gill had tea with Nicky.

Tuesday 5th October 1965
Worked hard at the office and am gradually beginning to get the feel of things. I hope. Caught the 12pm bus to Esher and did my double stamp shopping. Philip had a bad night coughing, but is all right in himself.

Wednesday 6th October 1965
Robert’s birthday.
PTA 7:45pm
It’s been a day of walking! Came home at 12pm – up again for hair cut at 2:15pm – home 2:45pm – back again to meet children at 3:15pm! Very tired tonight – have mowed the lawn and given it a kill or cure treatment for daisies.

Thursday 7th October 1965
Was late leaving the office today – in fact Cyril picked me up in Steels Lane at 12:20pm. We had a snack lunch. Very humid atmosphere – everywhere seems a bit damp. Went for a walk with the children after school.

Friday 8th October 1965
Cyril in Town.
Did my three hours stint this morning and have had a leisurely afternoon. Decided against rushing off to do the weekend shopping and had the Avon Rep here this afternoon and have ordered one or two things for Christmas.

Saturday 9th October 1965
Cyril’s Reunion.
Cyril decided against going to his reunion – for one thing he wasn’t over sure about the car – he fitted a new hose this morning. We did our shopping in Esher and afterwards went to Cobham for some wood. I’ve done a bit of washing and ironing since and have also shampooed and set my hair. Gill has been out with Phyl, Stan and Julian and is having tea with them.

Sunday 10th October 1965
A fine day – children have been to Sunday School and this afternoon, Gillian and I have been out picking sloes (for sloe gin!!!). Have had a writing session this evening – Jacq*, Barrie and Greenie.

(* Just a note about Jacq and his wife Lie, de Rooj. They lived in Nijmegen in Holland and befriended Peggy when they, along with Jacq’s parents, were, I believe, ‘assigned’ to look after the grave of Peggy’s brother, Pat,  who was a Paratrooper killed during Operation Market Garden in 1944.  Peggy and Cyril had several visits to Nijmegen during the 1950’s and into the 1970’s. Jacq and Lie had two children, roughly the same age as Gill and Phil, Ellen and Jacky de Rooj. Sadly, contact was lost with them in the late 1970’s after Lie died)
